Evidence Based Practice: Creating a Culture of Inquiry

Summary:

Evidence based practice (EBP) is internationally acclaimed as the gold standard for delivering the highest quality care. An essential component of the Forces of Magnetism, EBP characterizes nursing excellence in Magnet organizations. Transforming the nursing work environment to promote and support EBP is an essential process for hospitals embarking on the Magnet journey. In this one-day workshop, participants learn the origins and evolution of EBP in nursing as a professional responsibility. The workshop is designed for nurse leaders at all levels of practice. Through a series of interactive skill building sessions, participants develop knowledge, discover change strategies, and practice skills needed to integrate evidence based practice into the professional nursing culture. The workshop focuses on establishing a spirit of clinical inquiry, formulating clinical questions, critiquing literature, and developing evidence based protocols and guidelines to improve care.

Objectives:

  • Describe the nature and process of evidence based practice.
  • Develop evidence based practice skills to frame clinical questions and search the literature.
  • Outline the process for developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence based practice guidelines.
  • Identify resources and strategies for creating an evidence based practice culture in nursing.
